Sanhuangzhai Scenic Area

Cliff-hanging plank walkways on the sheer quartzite face of Mount Song.

⏰ Hours

08:00–17:30 (cableway last uphill ride 16:00)

🎫 Reservation

Same real-name ticket as Shaolin Temple

🎟 Ticket

Included in the ¥80 Shaolin joint ticket; cableway ¥70 one-way (optional)

⏳ Suggested duration

3.5–5 hours on foot

The most dramatic scenery in the Songshan range: suspended walkways, the suspension bridge, and the geological cross-section of the "Songshan unconformity". This is the hiking half of the Shaolin ticket — most people enter from the Shaolin side, walk the ridge, and return.

🚌 Getting there

Enter via the Shaolin Temple scenic area, then take the cableway or hike from Sanhuang Village side near Dengfeng. The full traverse between both gates takes 6+ hours.

🙇 Etiquette & taboos for international visitors

  • ◆This is a natural reserve and quasi-religious site — no loudspeakers or drones without permit.
  • ◆Carry your rubbish back down; bins are scarce on the ridge.

📷 Photography rules

Best light is early morning from the suspension bridge. The cliff walkway has safety mesh that appears in photos — shoot towards the horizon to avoid it.

🌧 Rainy day / low season / holidays

Walkways close in heavy rain or thunderstorm. In light rain the rock turns spectacular but very slippery — proper shoes are essential.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Is the hike suitable for children?
Ages 8+ with the cableway both ways is manageable; the full traverse is not recommended for young children.
