Shaolin 7-Day Chan Study Course

A structured week of sitting meditation, walking meditation, tea ceremony and Chan history lectures, taught by cultural course instructors. Sessions open in April, June, September and November; 20–30 participants per cohort; ¥3,800–4,800 including shared accommodation and vegetarian meals. Apply via the official cultural-experience platform 30+ days in advance.

Shaolin Chan Academy International Program

The Chan Academy, inside the historic grounds, runs longer retreats (10–21 days) with an English-language track in summer. Daily schedule: 05:30 rise, meditation blocks alternating with work practice and lectures. Application requires a short statement of purpose.

Erzu Temple immersive experience (reference case)

Three hours south in Anyang prefecture, Erzu Temple — where the Second Chan Patriarch Huike practiced — offers weekend immersive visits. Included here as a reference example of what a mature program looks like.

FAQ

Do I need to be Buddhist to join?
No. Courses are framed as cultural study; participants of any background are welcome.
Is English used during the course?
The 7-day course is Mandarin with handouts in English; the summer international program track is taught in English.
